The Proper Skin Care Routine Order For Morning and Night

The Proper Skin Care Routine Order For Morning and Night

It’s easy to get in the habit of doing certain skin care steps in an order that makes sense for you, but it may not be the best order for your skin. In fact, millions of men buy skin care products and fail to get the most out of them, simply because they end up doing things in the wrong order. You might think that it’s a good idea to cleanse your face after you put on moisturizer, for example, but this will greatly reduce your ability to enjoy hydrated skin! Fortunately, learning the correct order for a skin care routine is not super complicated, and Anthony is here to help you get started.

So, what is the correct order for men’s skin care routine? What steps should you take in the morning? Does the facial skin care routine order change at night time? Lastly, where can you find the quality products you need for the perfect skin care routine?

In today’s guide, we will answer all of these questions and more, so let’s get started!

What Is the Order of a Skin Care Routine?

The correct order of a skin care routine may differ slightly based on your particular needs. That said, most men can stick to the same basic steps, in this order:

  1. Cleanse - First, you’ll want to make sure that your skin is cleansed of dirt and excess oil. This ensures that you don’t apply additional products on top of debris that could irritate or damage your skin.
  2. Exfoliate - Exfoliating takes cleansing to the next level. It goes deeper into the pores to remove even more oil, dirt, and debris. Additionally, it sweeps away the layer of dead skin cells, allowing other products to penetrate deeper into the epidermis (the top layer of skin).
  3. Moisturize - Skin needs proper hydration to remain elastic, bright, and youthful. Applying a moisturizer is a key step that should be practiced at least twice a day (AM and PM).
  4. Treat & Protect - Finally, depending on your skin type and specific needs, you may need to apply certain treatments or additional products to protect your skin. For example, if you struggle with under-eye bags, you may want to use an eye cream, or if you want to prevent ingrown hairs, you can apply an ingrown hair treatment. If you spend a lot of time in direct sunlight, it’s also important to protect your skin from the damaging UV rays of the sun with an SPF day cream.

Morning Skin Care Routine Steps in Order

While the steps outlined in the previous section will show you the correct order for a skin care routine, there are some differences to consider between what you should do in the morning and what you should do at night. By some estimates, roughly 60% of men shower in the morning, while a much smaller percentage shower at night (and some do both). Since showering is more common in the morning, we’re going to take a look at a standard morning skin care routine that incorporates showering:

  1. Shower - Keep your face and body clean with Anthony’s Exfoliating + Cleansing Bar Soap, or our 2-in-1 Invigorating Rush Hair + Body Wash.
  2. Cleanser and Mild Exfoliator - In the morning, you’ll definitely want to cleanse your face after you shower to start the day off with clean skin. However, you won’t want to over-exfoliate (especially if you already exfoliated in the shower), as this could leave your skin more susceptible to sun or environmental damage. For this reason, we recommend a good 2-in-1 cleanser and gentle exfoliator, like our Glycolic Facial Cleanser.
  3. Serum - After you’ve cleansed and exfoliated, you’ll want to add a serum to the mix. This can help even out your skin tone and generally brighten your skin before hydrating. We recommend our High Performance Vitamin C Facial Serum.
  4. Moisturizer - For morning moisturization, you want to make sure that you use a moisturizer that can last all day. If not, you’ll need to continue to reapply the product throughout the day. For all-day hydration, we recommend our All Purpose Facial Moisturizer, which is effective for virtually any skin type.
  5. SPF Day Cream - Sun protection is extremely important, especially if you want to avoid signs of premature aging. Anthony’s Day Cream SPF 30 can provide your skin with nourishing vitamins and protect it from harmful UV rays at the same time.
  6. (Optional) Eye Cream - If you struggle with dark circles, puffiness around the eyes, or under eye bags, you should consider finishing your morning skin care routine with our High Performance Continuous Moisture Eye Cream. This cream can also be applied at night as needed.

Night Skin Care Routine Steps in Order

Night time skin care is similar to morning skin care — with a few important differences. The biggest difference is that, if you’re like more than half of men, you’re not taking a second shower. However, this will depend on your personal preferences and hygiene needs. In any case, assuming that you’re foregoing the evening shower, here are the steps you can follow to take care of your skin at night:

  1. Cleanser - You’ll definitely want to cleanse your face again before going to bed, but if you already exfoliated in the morning, you may not need to do it a second time at night. In general, you should aim to exfoliate a few times per week, so determine whether exfoliating in the morning or at night is best for you. For a gentle night cleanse, consider our Kind Cleansing Water.
  2. Serum - Since you’re more likely to look and feel tired at night, you may be more interested in using anti-aging products during this time. While all of our serums work in the morning or evening, a great choice for anti-aging effects is our High Performance Anti-Wrinkle Glycolic Peptide Serum.
  3. Moisturizer - Since you don’t have to worry about the sun during your evening skin care routine, you can focus more on standard hydration. For this reason, we recommend our Hydrate + Repair Honey Mask. Just remember that you’ll need to keep the mask on for at least 10 minutes and rinse it off before going to bed.
  4. (Optional) Eye Cream - Once again, if you’re struggling with puffy eyes, you may find it useful to apply a quality eye cream in the morning and at night. This way, you can wake up and go to sleep with a fresh, vibrant appearance.
